TWIMMS Thoughts
"Lots of products originate, when a question is asked.
Some creations just arise from an impuls, an urge, no questions asked."
Some creations just arise from an impuls, an urge, no questions asked."
As a designer, it was always a challenge to verbally justify my choices, when I created my products.
Why do you use this color? Why do you paint these portraits? Why choose material like jeans? Why do you want it to be clothes? Why are you always painting portraits of ladies? Are there no other choices possible or even better? So, for years and years I told everybody, I just want to make beautiful things, I don't know why and that's all!
In 2012 I began studying philosophy, and after I graduated, I went back to my workplace. And you know what? I started to understand my own work. My urges, my passions, my impulses díd come from questions. I started to see why I made the things I made. And for the first time it wasn't just making beautiful things!
No, I was actually trying to reach perfection, I was looking for the good in things, I was busy with existantial issues and I was searching for a sublime, divine something..., maybe outside of our reality? And that's when my idea for TWIMMS arose! Lots of people are looking for..., something, and maybe I can show them. Even if it is just for a moment.
TWIMMS stands for: "The World Is My Museumshow." As an idealist, I really want to contribute to the beauty in every aspect of our life in this world. And I want everybody to see this. That's why I made a collection of wearable art, jeansjackets with a message.
My first collection of jackets is about a sad topic, you would say. About farewells, letting go and irriversable goodbyes. Like we all see in our day to day life; refugees leaving their family and homes; lovers that break up; family members you lose and time, which can never be relived but will always be remembered.
My question is, can you find beauty in these tragic moments, that we will all encounter in our lives? It's Shakespeare that had his Romeo say: " Parting is such sweet sorrow." This line has always inspired me. What is this sweet in all the sorrow, can I find it and show it?
I want to create an exhibition, as a part of this world. That's why I use the jackets, old jeans jackets, loaded with memories. The jackets, worn bij their owners are the works of art, exposed just in the streets. Portraits of beautiful creatures, that look over their shoulder for one last time. A jacket filled with embroidered lace of herbs, beautiful poetry and colorfull animals, all with a deeper meaning. When the owner walks the streets, people can enjoy the beauty of the jacket for free. And a QR-code on the back of the jackets enables the spectators to go to the website, where they can read the whole poem and learn about the symbolism of the herbs and the animals.
It's just a jacket, some treads, beats and some paint, but it's also more and I hope it will positively influence a little moment in the life of a person. I love making these works, it's my passion and I can't stop........., actually nothing changed. I still make beautiful things :)!
